It was a smashing day !

Hello All,

We had an absolutely fantastic day at the Big Picnic on June 9th, thanks to the support from the Eden Communities Project and the organisation of the Resilience Group and above all to everyone who came and made it so fun !

A huge thank you to all the local groups and individuals who made the day so special:

Open Sea Band for their uplifting and continuous music who gave a party vibe

Kirkton of Largo for the mouthwatering home-baking
Messy Church for the engaging kids’ activities
Paxton Centre for crafts, sweets, quizzes, and a great raffle
Friends of Largo Bay for showcasing their inspiring conservation work
Riding for the Disabled for sharing their amazing projects and activities
Lundin Sports Club for so many fun activities, toilets, tombola, cold drinks and sports including table tennis and their open doors
The Bowling Club for the tasty ice cream, bar and warm welcome
Hatti Group for their joyful presence and face-painting
Upper Largo Horticultural Society for the plant sale
William Morrison from Leven Programme for collecting ideas and memories for the River Leven bench poems
Donald Low and his impressive kite

And everyone else who contributed to the vibrant atmosphere!

It was heartwarming to see everyone enjoying the sunshine, music, and great company in such a wonderful space.

We can’t wait to see you all again next year!

Volunteers Week

Last week (3rd to the 9th of June) was also Volunteers’ Week, and we want to extend our deepest gratitude to all the dedicated volunteers at Largo Communities Together and associated projects.

Their contributions are invaluable and keep our community thriving as do the countless other people who help make the Largo Area Shine !

Here are just a few highlights from what they shared about their roles and experiences:

Jan Kerr

Why I Volunteer with Largo Communities Together: “My volunteer role at LCT is around equity and inclusion. Most of my experience in this field is around disability. I like to help raise awareness amongst the general public to make it easier for disabled people to get out and about, especially those who use a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Barriers to inclusion, such as steps, locked gates, overgrown hedges, parked cars, bins on pavements, blocked dropped kerbs – all the things that most people take for granted, can discourage people from going out, making them isolated unnecessarily.”

Favourite Place In The Largo Area: “My favourite place in the area happens to be the grounds at Homelands. There is an abundance of wildlife, which our volunteers encourage through providing habitats and feeding stations for birds, hedgehogs, frogs, bees, butterflies, squirrels, bugs and we’ve even had the occasional fox pay us a visit. The gardens are colourful throughout the year – with snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils, tulips, azaleas, sunflowers, rhododendrons, a wildflower patch etc. There’s always a splash of colour, whatever the season. We are looking for more volunteers to help us look after this very special place.”

Imagine you could time travel to any point in history, but you could only observe and not interact. Where and when would you go? ” If I could travel to any point in history, I’d like to be an observer of the Russian Revolution in 1917. I certainly wouldn’t want to interact because it was a very dangerous time. Russian history has always been a fascination of mine since high school. I was lucky enough to visit Moscow, St Petersburg and Kronstadt when it was safe to travel to these places. Seeing the vast wealth of the Tsars highlighted the need for change. It really brought home the inequality that existed and could easily relate to more recent times.”

Why I Volunteer with Largo Communities Together: “I enjoy working with LCT as it allows me to contribute to the community in which I live. As a volunteer, I lead the Friends of Largo group in activities and events intended to help protect and enhance Largo Bay and all who benefit from this amazing environment: locals and visitors, humans, and nature.”

Favourite Place In The Largo Area: “My favourite place in the Largo Area is The Fife Coastal Path; great views across the Bay surrounded by wildflowers and birdsong watching the weather cross the Forth.”

If you had to listen to only one song for the rest of your life what would it be: “If I had to choose only one song to listen to for the rest of my life it would be ‘Mr Blue Sky’ by Electric Light Orchestra.”

Why I Volunteer with Largo Communities Together: “I am Chair of the Pier Group. For the past six years, we have been attempting to prepare designs, engineering solutions, and funding packages in an attempt to restore the Pier. I find volunteering within LCT to be a great experience, receiving a great deal of support from all my colleagues. The members of the Pier Group give a great deal of their time and expertise.”

Favourite Place In The Largo Area: “My favourite place in Lower Largo is sitting in my garden looking out over the Bay.”

If you could instantly become an expert in any one skill, what skill would you choose? ” I would like to become an instant DIY expert, particularly working with wood and stone!”

Why I Volunteer with Largo Communities Together: “Just love being involved, meeting folk and learning new things. When I retired, I had time and experience to give. I’m happy to do anything that you get to wear a Hi-Vis Vest for but tend to be involved in finding ways to take forward the actions our community has identified.”

Favourite Place In The Largo Area: “My special place is the gate and steps leading down to the beach after you have crossed Lundin Links Golf Course. It takes your breath away.”

If you were to start a collection of unusual objects, what would you collect and why? “I’m a collector of odd things and don’t have much room to collect more, but would love to collect art deco ceramic tiles and maybe get enough to use in the house …..next interior decoration project?”

𝗘𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴:-

“With regards to volunteering, I was Chairperson of Fife Headway, a volunteer group from 1998 until 2008 travelling to Edinburgh and Glasgow some of the time to learn as much as I could about head injury as my son received a severe head injury in a road traffic accident and I wanted to be able to do my best for him and to help the organisation and head injured people by volunteering in my home area.

I can’t begin to tell you some of the heart breaking stories I came across during that time as well as marvelling at the skill and knowledge of the surgeons and nursing staff who saved umpteen lives including that of my son who is in his mid fifties now.

I met many wonderful people who were volunteers for Headway and who made such a difference to the lives of head injured people and also worked tirelessly for better services and help for these people. I could go on and on………

Now, in my seventies I saw an opportunity to meet new people be they volunteers or users of the Warm Spaces initiative.

I’m glad I did volunteer as, just as I’d hoped, I did meet lovely volunteers ( and a great soup maker called Christopher ). I met locals who came along to have a bowl of this wonderful soup, get warm and have a good blether. I learned a lot from doing this, especially about the area I live in from those who were born and bred here in Upper Largo and their memories about all things and people “Largo” were astounding!

No one said “do this” or “do that”. We just mucked in and found things to do and it all ran like clockwork. There was a wonderful friendly atmosphere and users and volunteers came together to enjoy the camaraderie, make new friends and enjoy the soup. Brilliant!”

𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲:-

“My home in Broomfield Gardens, North Feus, Upper Largo where I live in a beautiful, peaceful place with views of the church, orchard and gardens. I love it.”

A little more about me:

1. I would invite William Wilberforce to dinner so I can ask him all about the abolition of slavery and his part in it.

2. My favourite film is Dr.Zhivago.

3. My newly learned skill would be how to use modern technology.

4. I love words and their meaning. I love discussion and debate and would love to join a debating group.

5. I’d be a giraffe so I could see everything!

6. I loved and found it interesting visiting the Parthenon in Greece. I also love all things Greek, the food, the culture the weather and olives!

What do you do as a volunteer: “I saw the request for a proofreader in the first issue of Largo Links, volunteered and was asked to join the team. I’ve also done a bit of writing and editing. eg it must have been in 2021 I “interviewed” Andrew Stenson and Dougi McMillan and wrote up an article on the upcoming 2nd Largo Arts Week. I’ve also ended up being the minute-taker for our editorial meetings. I’ve realised over time that I’m a details person, and a bit of a stickler for accuracy so this suits me fine. It’s been great to get to know the folk on the team too, whom I might not have met otherwise.”

My favourite place in the Largo area: “hmm difficult. There are two. Having decided to try to move here as I, like many others, came here on holiday as a child for many years, one would have to be the walk down from Woodlands Road, under the viaduct to the harbour, which we did every day with our buckets and spades, making as much noise as possible under the viaduct to get an echo! and the other, walking along Main Street from the Crusoe and then stopping at the bend at Alan Faulds’ garden and Malagan sculpture to look out across the bay and then continuing along to the Temple and beyond.”

Superpower for a day? “I’m not a fan of fantasy, but time-travel, along with flying and X-ray eyes would be good, then I could go back and find out where and how my ancestors lived, visit places I’ve not been to and also just be nosy wherever I wanted.”

What do you do as a volunteer: “At work, I’m a facilitator and mediator in organisations and volunteer to offer those skills. Bigger than that for me is feeling part of a community, building relationships and networks that might be there when people are in most need. It’s also a lot of fun. The people I have met here due to volunteering make me smile and laugh a lot. I also volunteer as the seagrass recorder for Friends of Largo Bay. It’s much more fun than running meetings!”

What is your relationship with the Largo Area: “I’ve been coming to Largo Sailing with my son since 1995, and I moved here mostly full-time in 2007. My favourite place is out on the water in my kayak. Our villages look amazing from out there!”

What mundane superpower would you choose?: “If I could have a mundane superpower, it would be the ability to write well. I’m pretty dyslexic, so stringing a few words together in an email or report is torturous for me.”

A few sentences about what I do as a volunteer for LCT:“I’m an LCT trustee and chair of the Assets and Access group; we support LCT’s land and property-based projects. Additionally I can always find time to support Friends of Largo Bay, and I can often be seen on the beach with a litter-picker or quadrat.”

Question: If you could teleport to any location in the world right now, where would you go and why?

Answer: “Rush hour in any city, just to remind me how lucky we are to live in here.”

Fav place in the Largo area:“Dumbarnie, looking back along the bay to Largo.”

Why I like volunteering: “Giving back to the community that supports me, my friends and my family – communities are all about collective support – where would that support be if we all sat back and expected things to happen… volunteering is rewarding, sometimes hard work but also great fun.”

Where in the Largo Area is your favourite place?

“… on the beach – where else?”

Imagine you’re writing a sequel to your favorite book or movie. What happens next? “I have two favourite movies…. The Railway Children, or The Deer Hunter … Hmmmmm.

OK so it’s The Railway Children 2… more of the same please. (although polite children shouldn’t ask for more).

Sentimentality is seen as weak, indulgent, and superficial, and yet I find immersing myself in this film thought provoking, deeply comforting and hopeful.

On the basis that you can’t get enough “feel good” or time to reflect on childhood values we all thought we should have, … let’s have more of the same.

…. As the children get embroiled in a county line smuggling mystery as notes are thrown from a train and Bobbie gets kidnapped as contraband is found near a siding of the line.

Its OK though Perks to the rescue as the “Even older gentleman” uses his influences to get the trains diverted and police involved etc.

Baddies in Jail, Perks injured but OK, Bobbie marries one of the rescuers (teacher from the local school), flash forward to her staying next to Perks with him playing with her children next to the diesel train rushing past on the line!

Or The Deer Hunter….. nah let’s not bother.”

Community Involvement:

James, finds himself fully engaged in the community through his work. Keeping busy is a priority for him, and he particularly enjoys the “artistic” aspect of his role, which involves the layout of advertisements and the overall magazine design. Interestingly, he humorously remarks that he was at the bottom of his art class for six years until he gave up the subject!

Desert Island Essentials:

If stranded on a desert island, James’s choices reveal his love for music and storytelling. He would bring a CD player, electricity to power it, and a collection of recordings featuring every episode of the iconic BBC Radio 4 program “Desert Island Discs.” This selection would provide him with endless hours of captivating interviews and musical discoveries, making his desert island experience a bit more bearable.

These are by no means all of the volunteers but it was fun to find out more about the people who keep things running… 🙂

Discovery Trail Trial:

On Monday, we embarked on an exciting trial of the Discovery Trail with Matt Pointon and local primary 4/5 students. Their insights were incredibly valuable to help develop a trail that engages and involves everyone. They are still in the development phase, but learning on the ground is proving to be the best way forward.

We are looking to do this with others too – so drop me a line if you want to be involved.

Hello Everyone,

Happy Volunteers’ Week to all the incredible people who help out in so many ways across our community!

Your dedication and hard work are truly appreciated.

We’ll be sharing some inspiring stories from our volunteers soon, highlighting the amazing work that goes on which we have been sharing on social media.

But in the meantime, we wanted to remind everyone that the Big Picnic is just around the corner!

The Big Picnic: Sunday 9th of June 12:30pm until 4:30pm

While the weather forecast is still a bit uncertain, it looks like we might be lucky enough to have some sunshine. So pack your picnic baskets, bring some cash, and don’t forget something to sit on!

Largo Area Mums

Dear Community Members,

We wanted to share information about a public meeting being organised by a group of local mums in the Largo Area.

The meeting aims to address the lack of nursery places and general childcare options in the community which is of concern to the group.

Details of the meeting are as follows:

Date: Monday, June 3rd
Time: 7 PM
Location: Durham Hall, Lower Largo

The meeting is open to anyone especially those affected by the shortage of childcare options, including parents/carers who have been unable to secure nursery places for their children, those struggling to find childcare in general, local childcare providers, and anyone with knowledge or insights to share.

The organisers are also conducting a short survey to gather more information here.

If you’re unable to attend the meeting, please consider filling out the survey or contacting the group directly at [email protected] if you have something to add.

Twinning Celebration:

We hope you all enjoyed the Twinning Parade this past weekend as much as we did! The sunshine certainly made it a truly memorable event.

This special Twinning Weekend was a community-wide effort, organised by the Largo Area

Community Council with the help of many dedicated volunteers. It was heartwarming to see so many of you come together to celebrate our twinning partnership.

The Community Council wanted to extend a huge THANK YOU to the following individuals and groups for their generosity and hard work in making this weekend a success:

Lundin Mill Primary School for their fantastic concert.
Euan Black and Kezia Scott-Bell from Wade Academy for their musical solos at the concert.
The Green Room (Stan and Gail Green) for donating the oak tree.

The Aurrie (Helen and David) for the lunch on Friday and food at the ceilidh.

Tomorrow: Supporting Those With Dementia

An event titled “How to support people with Dementia in your community” will take place tomorrow at the Paxton Centre, 14a Links Road, Lundin Links, on:

Thursday, May 23rd from 11 am to 12:30 pm.

The event will focus on the work of Alzheimer Scotland and will explore ways to support individuals with dementia in the local area.

A Quiz Fundraiser for the Friends of Largo Bay:

A quiz fundraiser for the Friends of Largo Bay will be held this Friday, May 24th from 7 pm to 9 pm.

It has been very popular well done to the group.

Let’s make this year the best one yet!

Join The Largo Library and Community Hub for a Garden Celebration and the grand opening of the Reading Garden on Saturday, June 15th, 2024, from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The event will include a presentation by Stan Green of Growforth and The Green Room, local expert horticulturalist, who will share insights on gardening with wind in mind and tips for buying plants.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. Afternoon tea will be served from 3 pm to 4:30 pm. The cost to attend the presentation and tea is £5 per person.

Plant and book stalls will be available for cash sales only.

Get ready for the best Big Picnic yet!

Apologies for yet another email !! We just wanted to make sure everyone knows about The Big Picnic and a few people may have missed this.

This year’s celebration is happening on June 9th, and we want YOU to be a part of it.

We know the notice is a bit shorter than usual. We apologize for that – we wanted to make sure our date didn’t clash with other great events like the town twinning project at the end of May and the railway opening at the start of June.

We also wanted to leave the week before free so people could enjoy those festivities.

Now, it’s all about the Big Picnic! Here’s how you can get involved:

Dust Off Your Picnic Basket: Pack your favourite food and drinks.

Largo Church is thrilled to announce the completion of their new Community Garden! They have six raised beds, and two are still available for local individuals or families interested in growing their own food. The beds are filled and ready for planting.

They will be creating a QR code and promoting at Waverley Station in Edinburgh to encourage people to visit Levenmouth. Submit your Fife events (welcometofife.com) If you want to go to Edinburgh to encourage people to take a trip to Levenmouth there is also a shout out for volunteers. The Simpson Institute Is Asking For Help

The Simpson Institute is hosting an open meeting tonight to discuss this highly valued community resource. Come along to the Hall from 6:30pm to join the chat.

As highlighted in our recent local place plan and community action plan, we are incredibly lucky to have fantastic community spaces like the many community halls, all maintained by dedicated volunteers.

These spaces make possible the many groups, interactions, and learning opportunities that make the Largo Area such a great place to live.

We know how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep our community vibrant. The Montrave Hall, Lundin Links is also looking for people to help in a variety of ways details below:

Thanks to ecologist and ranger Tony Wilson, The Friends of Largo Bay biodiversity monitoring group learned so much about Largo Bay’s unique environment. This knowledge fuels their exciting plans for long-term biodiversity monitoring.

Calling All Seaweed Sleuths!

Join the biodiversity team on April 24th for the Great Seaweed Search! Whether you’re an expert or just curious, this is a wonderful experience with amazing people. We’re also working to improve water quality, a top priority for our community.

Search for Seaweed. The teams latest project is on Wednesday 24th April at 08.30.

Be a Citizen Scientist and join to help data collection across the Uk

All volunteers welcome. Wrap up well and help understanding of the environment.

Calling Largo Bay Nature Enthusiasts!

The Friends of Largo Bay are revving up their biodiversity project and would love your involvement!

Back in January, there was a call for volunteers to explore the bay’s biodiversity.

Since then, project leads have been brainstorming and drawing inspiration from other coastal areas.

Here’s how you can get involved:

Drop-in Session at the Railway Inn!

Join a casual meet-up at the Railway Inn on Tuesday & Wednesday, April 2nd & 3rd (6:30-7:30pm). That’s tonight & tomorrow evening 🙂

What to expect:

Community Chat & Recruitment: Discuss the project, meet fellow nature enthusiasts, and potentially join the team!
Marine Expertise Wanted! The project is especially looking for volunteers with marine biology knowledge to share their expertise.
Species ID Days & New Areas: Plans for further species identification days are in the works, potentially focusing on the west side towards the harbor (thanks, Gail!).
Data Update: Data collected through Epicollect will be submitted to the Fife Nature Records Centre. Some entries may require editing for accuracy before submission. (https://five.epicollect.net/project/my-profile/data)
Seagrass Training & Monitoring: Project leads will be attending seagrass training and share the knowledge with the group. A big thanks to Niall and Lou for their continued interest in monitoring this important habitat!

A Major Triumph For The Bay

25th March 2024

Dear All,

I hope this message finds you well, today we give acknowledgement to the accomplishment and pride that Friends of Largo Bay must feel after yesterday’s monumental beach clean along Largo Bay.

Organising such an event starting from five distinct locations was no small feat, and the dedication and hard work of everyone involved have not gone unnoticed. Well done to a very dedicated team.

A significant aspect of their endeavour was not only to clear the beaches of litter but also to contribute valuable data to the Marine Conservation Society. The meticulous counting of every piece of plastic and polystyrene has provided critical insights into the types, quantities, and locations of coastal debris, enhancing the understanding and strategies for marine conservation.

Yesterday marked a significant milestone in the Great British Spring Clean, witnessing an absolutely epic turnout of 99 volunteers, among whom was David Spence from the Fife Street Champions, contributing immensely by aiding in the uplift of collected bags alongside Fife Coast and Countryside Trust.

Notably, local farmer David Russell played a pivotal role with his tractor, facilitating the removal of cumbersome items like tractor wheels, nets, ropes, heavy plastic, and creels.

This event also marked the groups inaugural attempt at litter surveying for the Marine Conservation Society, a venture met with success thanks to the dedication of our teams who meticulously identified even the smallest fragments for accurate allocation. Blessed with sunshine, the day was undeniably well spent across two productive hours.

Looking forward, they are excited to announce five more beach cleans scheduled for this year, revisiting the areas tackled yesterday.

These subsequent cleans will include another round of litter surveying, enhancing our contribution to building a comprehensive understanding of the challenges our shorelines face.

These efforts are crucial in assisting the Marine Conservation Society with the data necessary to influence policy decisions aimed at protecting our environment.

Tomorrow marks our last Simpson Institute Upper Largo Warm Welcome event, promising a special treat as Christopher Trotter will be delighting us with his homemade soup. We invite you to join us from 11 am at the Simpson Institute Upper Largo for this heart-warming occasion.

The warmth continues into the week with our Warm Wednesday event at the Largo Library and Community Hub. Starting at 11:30 am, it’s a perfect midweek uplift featuring Bingo, guaranteed to bring smiles and laughter. And to round off our Warm Welcome days, there is a Souper Sunday gathering at Durham Hall this Sunday.

We owe a tremendous thank you to all our generous volunteers and to those who’ve contributed, including Ewan Fraser and Fife Council, whose support has been invaluable. These events have been made all the richer thanks to your efforts and contributions.

Community Clean Up

We are on the cusp of a momentous occasion – the Largo Bay Clean, a large-scale and ambitious effort aimed at not only beautifying our beloved coastlines but also making a meaningful impact on national environmental policies.

This initiative is a pivotal component of our Great British Beach Clean and aligns with the objectives set forth in the Largo Communities Together Place Plan. Our goals are twofold:

1. To uphold the pristine condition of our beaches, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship.

2. To contribute our litter collection data to the Marine Conservation Society’s Database, thereby influencing National Policy on marine conservation.

Your participation is crucial.

We have designated five key areas for cleanup this coming Sunday This role not only involves hands-on effort in the cleanup but also entails contributing to a larger database that aids in policy formation.

We really want to push ahead with making the area more walkable, and wheelable for everyone firstly we are focusing on the pathways between Upper and Lower Largo and between New Gilston and Woodside as these are affecting many peoples quality of lives

Your stories and testimonials about the current conditions of these pathways and their impact on your daily life are invaluable to our advocacy efforts.

We are putting together a collection of stories we would love your input: please send us your images or stories that highlight the urgency for improvement in good, safe pleasant walkways specifically at these key spots but also anywhere that impacts you. This will really help us build a strong case.

Your involvement is instrumental in driving positive change within our community and beyond.

On Saturday the 9th of March the volunteers of Friends of Largo Bay delivered a Science Saturday session at Largo Library and Community Hub on Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises.

They say Every Day is a Learning Day – certainly is when it is fact collecting and checking. A BIG shout out to our team of very enthusiastic and motivated volunteers who give freely of their time to plan and deliver.

We were too busy running around mythbusting and fact finding and watching very cool videos to take photos. Extras were left in the Largo Library and Community Hub, 7 Lundin Square so feel free to pick one up.

Did you know that the Sei Whale Sinks… rather than dive? Now you do… We also know why a seal is not a Cetacean and that the Orca is in fact a dolphin. Feel free to join in with other facts you would like to share.

The point of the session was to inform our young scientists and accompanying adults just what Cetaceans are right there on our very own doorstep – hidden depths indeed.
We had a fun information pack to give out at the end of the session so they can carry on their own enquiry at home.

Community Update and Call to Action:

20th February 2024

Our Warm Welcome Tuesdays and Warm Wednesdays events will be continuing until the end of March. Join us at 11 am on Tuesday mornings in Upper Largo, and from 11:30 am at the Largo Library and Community Hub. If transport is needed to either location, please do not hesitate to let us know. Many thanks to all the incredible people who have helped and all our attendees and the sponsors for this who included local Ewan Fraser. It has been a great way to gather and get to know people and we hope to build on it year by year.

Our efforts to celebrate our heritage, culture, and identity are underway. We are currently mapping out the intriguing and interesting features for heritage trails using our initial engagements as a starting point. While this process will take some time as we carefully consider all themes, access and needs. And we would love your input.

Some ideas we initially gathered are below.

We will follow up with some public meets, we are going to bring some ideas along to the Warm Welcomes next week and broaden it out to everyone as we go…

An initial trail will come from Leven to link up with the new railway and will be supported by Welcome Levenmouth.

We are also planning for our annual Big Picnic at the beginning of June, which will coinciding with the Levenmouth Railway opening. We encourage all community groups across Levenmouth to participate in activities during that week. Are you going to get involved? Let us know what your requirements are!

The latest edition of Largo Links has been distributed or is on its way to every household in the area. This issue includes summarised information on the local place plan and community action plan in a booklet insert, providing valuable insights into our collective vision for the future, so many great things is already underway by various groups and individuals but it is also good to have a framework for actions to help guide what we support. We have been asked by the Development Trust Association of Scotland to share our Local Place Plan experience later on this month in Edinburgh as so many communities are keen to have their say on local development.

Progress on crucial projects such as beach wheelchairs and Changing Places Toilets is ongoing, and there has been a huge amount of work done already by several very committed people. We appreciate your patience and support as we work to enhance accessibility in our community and we will need your help once things are going to help with all the maintenance. Many people are currently unable to access one of the most popular features in the area due to access issues, and it will be amazing to offer better access to everyone.

Our biodiversity/coastal group Friends of Largo Bay is diligently working on data collection regarding litter and organising a biodiversity walk for next month. ( more on that soon)

Friends of Largo Bay also invite you to join them for our first beach clean of the year, The Great British Spring Clean.

Last year, they removed an impressive 2 tonnes of detritus from the beach thanks to local Farmer Bill Clarke too for his help, and are eager to surpass that achievement together this time. We need your help !!

Lundin Mill Primary School Updates

The Lundin Mill P7’s are organising and hosting a Spring Fayre on the 22nd March in order to raise much needed funds towards their end of year celebration and their leavers hoodies.

The children have asked if there is anyone in our generous community who would kindly donate any raffle prizes or tombola goodies. Any help would be greatly appreciated and one of us is happy to collect. Alternatively, if you’d prefer, any items/prizes can be dropped off at the Lundin Mill school office. As ever, thank you for your continued support.

Also a great update: As some of you may have seen, Lundin Mill Primary has started a Walking Bus in the mornings in an attempt to ease up on traffic/congestion at drop off and thus keeping our kids safer and our residents happier (and it also promotes active travel to school!). They leave from the corner of Crescent Road and Emsdorf every morning at 8:45 a.m. and have had a really good amount of children sign up and they really enjoy it. Look out for us in our fab hi viz next time you’re in the area!

Also there is still time to get in to see the 50th anniversary of Lundin Mill displays: Due to the success of the 50th anniversary celebration Lundin Mill Primary will extend their open days tomorrow and next week, finishing on Thursday 14th March. The school will be open to visitors from 10am to 6pm so please come along and have a look at the lovely displays the children have worked hard at creating.

Please note any under 16s should be accompanied by an adult

The Warm Welcome sessions are open to everyone, aimed at providing a supportive and inclusive environment where all feel valued and connected.

Whether you’re a familiar face or new to the area, a hearty welcome and a friendly atmosphere await you, they have been tirelessly supported by amazing volunteers, local businesses including Ewan Fraser who has generously sponsored the programme, Fife Council and other donations. Biodiversity Monitoring Project Progress

Our Friends of Largo Bay group has seen significant advancements in their Biodiversity Monitoring Project, led by local enthusiast Janice Duncan in collaboration with NatureScot, they were also visited by Jo McFarlane of the Charlestown, Limekilns and Pattiesmuir (CLP) Nature Conservation Group who shared their groups remarkable successes in campaigning for better conditions and connecting people to nature. We look forward to developing these links with other coastal communities.

Friends of Largo Bay are committed to enhancing the project’s effectiveness through great local training opportunities so watch this space and they welcome everyone who may be interested in contributing to these studies, regardless of experience or knowledge, if you do have any special skills to share we would welcome your input, its a great way to learn and connect !

Key study areas include seaweed data collection, beach slope analysis, and rocky shore studies, with Lyle Boyle from the Ecology Centre and the Restoration Forth project as well as Fife Coast and Countryside Trust and NatureScot offering their ongoing invaluable expertise.

Litter Mapping and Data Integration.

Litter mapping has emerged as a crucial complementary study area, aiming to contribute to national data collection efforts and influence environmental policy. The group has explored several training opportunities for litter management and conservation, with numerous beach cleans on the horizon. If you are interested in this training we can point you in the right direction so let us know. Just reply to this email or get in touch with the group.

Science Saturdays Update

The recent Science Saturday events at the Largo Library and Community Hub have been met with enthusiasm. Friends of Largo Bay are looking to expand these educational opportunities, and volunteers are always welcome to join their efforts, see poster for upcoming dates, and how to book !

Restoration Forth Project Update

The Restoration Forth seagrass officer Lyle Boyle joined the Friends of Largo Bay to share how the project continues to grow, with new team members and focus areas, including oyster conservation and the study of Blue Mussels’ decline.

‘Largo Communities Together is a vision for an area which covers Largo, Lundin Links and several villages stretching from Silverburn up to the boundary of Ceres – and the team behind it want it to be a blueprint which leads to actions and support.

The Local Place Plan and Community Plan are two documents created by the trust and Largo Area Community Council which, put together, could lead to a “thriving, sustainable community” – in short, the pages set out the aims and aspirations of the people who live and work in the area.

The place plan is rich in detail. It covers everything from traffic and pedestrian safety improvements, to preserving heritage and the environment, travel plans, and housing. It has been a huge undertaking by the volunteer members of the trust supported by Priya Logan, its development officer.

She said: “It is not a dry plan. It captures what local people are already enthusiastic about and where their energies are going. It’s easy to find out what people are unhappy about, but it is important to also know what they are passionate about.”And across the Largo area, they found people with a real desire to see their area improved and developed. Launched in 2017, the trust has some 350 members – 10% of those eligible to vote in the area – and for Alistair Brown, its role is to listen and make sure people’s voices are then heard.

“We have taken the past, we are in the present and the future will be community action plan,” he said “Our job is to keep engaging with people so we are aware of any changes in voices.”The trust has set up a number of sub groups to focus specific passions and knowledge on key areas as it takes its remit across a huge range of issues. It wants to see community assets such as the Simpson Institute retained, while tapping into the area’s rich heritage, with more done to promote and celebrate its links to Alexander Selkirk.

Its coastal setting is perfect to explore more use of beach wheelchairs to improve accessibility to the shore, while new pathways could open up the great outdoors even further. The Friends of Largo Bay has taken off with huge enthusiasm – it is one of several sub groups at the heart of the plan – and that could open the door to tackling major issues such as upgrading sewage works, expanding wooded areas, and preserving Largo Pier.’

Championing Beach Access

Let’s raise the roof for the Beach Wheelchairs initiative! With your backing, we’ve soared in the public vote for the recent bid at the OUR RIVER LEVEN COMMUNITY FUND, ensuring we can add to the beach walker kindly funded by St Andrews University Community Fund another amazing gift of Two Beach Wheelchairs to our community assets.

We’re not just over the moon; we’re over the stars with the unity and support you’ve shown. We will be leaping bounds with accessibility with this addition to the Changing Places Toilets coming soon ! ( We will update you as we know timelines )

AGM and Community Actions

I hope this message finds you well. I’m writing to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who joined us for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Monday evening. Your presence greatly enriched this pivotal gathering for our community.

Reflecting on the evening, it was so inspiring to see such a strong turnout.

The AGM kicked off promptly, with the first half dedicated to general business, and we were pleased to see so many of you.

This AGM was a significant step in transitioning our broad visions into specific, actionable projects. We mentioned the Local Place Plan, which, thanks to valuable ongoing community input, only needs minor tweaking before submission. The focus on concrete localized actions and initiatives was evident, underscoring our commitment to realizing the community’s aspirations.

The participation and engagement during the AGM were heartening. It was not just about having a say but about being an active part of our community’s exciting journey. Many of you shared your thoughts, and some even signed up to help bring these ideas to life.

We revisited a variety of proposed initiatives, each aiming to enhance different aspects of community life. From the Water Improvement Project, emphasizing our commitment to the environment, to plans for advocating to repurposing the former hotel site for community use or parking, your interest in these proposals was evident.

The integration with broader initiatives like the Levenmouth Cycling Strategy, the Skillshare Programme’s focus on community-led learning, and sustainable living projects like the Tree Warden Scheme highlight your collective vision for a vibrant and sustainable future.

Your interest in projects ranging from dementia awareness and expanding volunteer networks to cultural events and youth engagement projects is a testament to our community’s diverse aspirations and commitment to inclusivity, safety, and heritage preservation.

As we move forward, each of these proposals, irrespective of scale, will play a crucial role in shaping our community. Your involvement and enthusiasm at the AGM have set a solid foundation for these endeavours. We will be publishing our community actions in full very soon, and are super grateful for your help to sort, prioritise and deliver.

Once again, thank you for being a part of this meaningful event. If you were not able to make it there will be plenty of opportunity for involvement as we go along and our mailbox is always open 🙂

Roadworks reminder

Also a reminder: we would like to inform you about upcoming ground investigation works at Harbour Wynd. Starting on Monday, 4th December 2023, and lasting approximately a week, these works are essential for the design and replacement of a nearby retaining wall.

The contractor, Ian Farmer Associates, will oversee the drilling works. While percussion boring will be employed, resulting in some noise, efforts will be made to minimize disturbances. These works will only occur during daylight hours to reduce noise impact.

Please note, for safety, Harbour Wynd will be closed during this period, and a diversion will be in place. We understand this might cause some inconvenience, and Fife Council appreciate your patience and cooperation. A letter drop will be conducted in the area to inform residents of these works. Please see below images.

Last but not least: As the festive season approaches, The Aurrie extends a warm and joyous invitation for a special Christmas Day celebration. Our AGM is coming up !

As a gentle reminder, our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is fast approaching. It’s scheduled for next Monday, a week from today, and will commence at 7:00 PM at the Aurrie.

This is an excellent opportunity for all of us to come together, discuss our community’s progress, and plan for the future, together.

Last Day Of Our Information Notice Period

15th November 2023

Today marks a significant milestone in our journey towards developing the Local Place Plan – it’s the final day of our information notice period.

Over the past weeks, your engagement and feedback have been invaluable in shaping a vision that truly resonates with the aspirations and needs of our community.

Your insights have contributed immensely to the development of a plan that we all can be proud of. We will review and tweak the details and then send in to Fife Council for inclusion in their development of the Local Development Plan.

Alongside that we have a Community Action Plan being developed to stay in the community and push things on, come to our AGM at 7pm at the Aurrie on the 27th of November to join in.

As we approach the end of this crucial period (at midnight,) I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to take this final opportunity to review the plan and share your thoughts.

Your perspective is vital to ensure that our plan reflects the needs of our community and your feedback will play a key role in shaping the future of our community.

Reminder about the opportunity for community engagement regarding our local place plan and the new train timetable.🕐🚄

Today, Eugene Clarke will be available at the Largo Library from 1 pm to 4 pm. He will be there to address any inquiries or concerns you may have regarding the new train timetable.

Your input is valuable to us as we aim to ensure that the timetable best serves our community’s needs. 🕐

As part of our ongoing efforts to involve our community members in shaping our future, we have released a draft of our place plan. We are actively seeking your opinions and feedback on this draft (available here: Largo Area Local Place Plan (arcgis.com) ).

Your insights are crucial in helping us create a plan that truly reflects the aspirations and priorities of our community note this is a spatial plan about land and buildings and is not decisive but will go to Fife Council as part of their evidence gathering for their Local Development Plan and we will also have a community action plan to accompany this plan and will provide a six monthly sounding board to check we are aligned with what people want. 🏡✨

You have until November 15th to share your thoughts with us. If you don’t agree with something in the plan or want to show your support – now is the time to say !!

We’re on the home stretch with our Local Place Plan, and the end is in sight. 🎉

Partnerships and Fine-Tuning 🤝

We’ve had invaluable help from our partners, such as Fife Council, Planning Aid Scotland, and many others, fine-tuning every detail to make our plan as close to perfect as we can.

Our information notice period is due to start next week and we will send out notification of that to make sure you get a chance to read it in full before submission.

We will also be at the community council meeting this month for a brief overview and will arrange another timely drop in for anyone who would rather something in person.

Current and Future Collaborations 🤗

We’ve been actively researching organisations that can help us deliver our community action plan too such as the Fife Carers Centre, Sustrans, Circular Economies, NatureScot as well as our ongoing links such as the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust and the exciting new Welcome to Levenmouth Tourism Project.

We’re already exploring how to develop local trails that can link up more widely and we have been supporting our Friends of Largo Bay group to develop their biodiversity, arts and litter cleaning projects which have been going well. We are also building active travel plans and looking at how to support young people more effectively as well as partnering with the local primary school to help support their comprehensive school travel plan, which will be supported by the active travel pathways that would connect our villages up…. and we are going to publish all the details soon !

With only SIX days left until the Big Picnic 2023 on the 27th of August, the excitement is building, and we REALLY need your help!

Tombola Donations Needed:

We are short of prizes for the tombola and are eagerly accepting contributions. Wine and spirits are welcome, but don’t feel restricted to expensive items. A tin or two (soup, lager, beans, etc.), cans of fizz, toiletries, bottles of water, sweets, jam, jewellery – the list is endless. You can hand them in at the Paxton Centre between 10am and 4pm every day till Saturday or drop them at 16 Woodlands Road.

The Largo and Newburn Horticultural Show is on at the Simpson Institute, Upper Largo this weekend. In the future we are going to make sure that the big picnic doesn’t clash with this long running event, and we hope that those who can manage to go along to both events and support them. Pony Axes Returns

Also, the Temple Car Park had the delightful company of Obama the pony today, and he will be there again tomorrow. Obama has been providing those who use wheelchairs with unique access to the bay. I hope this email finds you well. Yesterday was a momentous day for Friends of Largo Bay, and I’m thrilled to share their exciting updates with you.

Seagrass Day at Largo Bay 🌱:

Yesterday was Seagrass Day, and we were blessed with wonderful sunshine ☀️. With the full support of 19 dedicated volunteers, Friends of Largo Bay conducted a survey of a section of the Bay to determine the number of seagrass colonies growing there.

Over the past few months, they have identified five colonies of variable sizes, but today’s painstaking and time-consuming observation rewarded us with the find of an additional sixth colony!

Not only did they discover this new colony, but they also found a fair number of plants with seed pods.

A huge thank you 🙏 to everyone who contributed with time, enthusiasm, and great company.

At our next (and final Build Our Place Plan) workshop, we’ll explore the natural environment, conservation, and recreation.

Join us, no special knowledge required just curiosity!

As a community we are exploring how to manage natural spaces including Land, Rivers, and Sea and connections to wild spaces for today and the future and considering the needs of people who live here.

Let’s explore what’s here now and what’s possible.

In addition, we will look at how this connects with groups and organisations that can help.

We will gather on Wednesday, June 21st, we will begin at 6:30pm at Durham Hall in Lower Largo. Feel free to come along, settle in and enjoy a cup of tea anytime from 6pm

Although it’s usually a little earlier, we will definitely wrap up by 9pm.

Tea, coffee, and biscuits are always available!

Your stories, our heritage

Our heritage workshop is on tomorrow

Stories and heritage can be used to teach us about the past, to connect us to our communities, and to inspire us to create new things.

We want to explore stories, the physical heritage of the area and the shared identity of the Largo Area.

This includes the stories that people bring when they settle here, the ones made on the land and relationships to others near and far.

How do we represent and celebrate all this richness, what needs to be restored?
How can we carry stories forward in a way that captures others imaginations and is relevant?
What stories are missing that we can bring back to life ?

Framing the evening, musician Greg from Open Sea will join us with some music to set the tone to reminisce and imagine. We will be also be joined by Marion Thomson of The Corra Foundation, an organisation that is based on connecting people to place. She will share her story of doing a peoples history project based in Methil over the past four years with some of those who participate. We will hear about local heritage projects and then explore what else could be done and how!

Come along and share your stories or just bring your curiosity Simpson Institute, Upper Largo, Tuesday the 6th of June, come anytime after 6pm to start by 6:30pm.

We will wrap up by 9pm though it’s usually a little earlier, tea, coffee and biscuits are always in supply !

A massive thank you to everyone who has been able to make it along to any of these workshops.

We are building so many great ideas that will enhance the area and tackle ongoing issues. At the end of this process we will feed back all the ideas that came in and give you a chance to vote on what matters most in your opinion.

Our next workshop is on heritage and legacy and looks at how we can protect and celebrate the history and culture locally and how we want to develop into the future.

It will be on at the Simpson Institute, Upper Largo, Tuesday the 6th of June, come anytime after 6pm to start by 6:30pm.

We will wrap up by 9pm though it’s usually a little earlier.

Knowing that the time and format may not suit everyone we will have an insert in the upcoming Largo Links so keep an eye out and if you missed a workshop take some time in your household to get your ideas down, we want to catch all ages groups, interests basically as many people as we can.

Seaweed Workshops continue.

Amanda Root who is a member of the group Friends Of Largo Bay and a keen seaweed advocate is running a series of free workshops looking at the whole subject and the very many uses and benefits with a longer term view to community run seaweed farming.

It has been generously funded by The Crown Estate and they will run in Anstruther, Crail and Largo. There was a great turn out to the first one and lots of interest in Seaweed.

The third one is this evening with Phil Taylor and Duncan Campbell at the Dreel Halls in Anstruther at 7pm, just show up.

Fife Seaweed Farm Workshops

Are you coming along ?

We want you along to our workshop, and it would be great to get a variety of inputs about specific things such as:

walking with children
any mobility related access issues
unsafe walkways
your experience of speed limits
parking
speed and density of traffic
cycling rurally

The goal of the workshop is to come up with a range of practical ideas and actions that would help make the villages safer and more connected.

Even if you can’t make the workshop or if you can, it would be great to get an image, a story or even a short video of something you struggle with in your area to give us points of discussion and an idea of the range of things we can tackle. Be A Friend To Largo Bay !

Friends of Largo Bay have not been missing a beat and now have a full calendar of beach cleans. See below !

They are also linking with a new arts project which is spread across the communities of The Forth called the 100 Species and Friends Of Largo Bay have chosen to look at the Dog Whelk and representing this small but surprisingly predatory creature in artistic ways to link with a bigger exhibition. No special arts experience needed – everyone welcome !

There are also opportunities to get involved with marine biodiversity monitoring for NatureScot and to build knowledge of what is in the bay.

We know that there are opportunities to build and improve pathways that can be used by all ages and accommodate mobility scooters, prams, bikes and are safe for children.

There are a few areas that have already come up as particularly in need of improvement and we want to hear your voice.

We will also gather your ideas for dealing with speed, parking and traffic density.

Our aim is to support community aspirations and co-create projects and actions that encourage an easy place to get around for everyone.

We Are Still On The Lookout For A Treasurer For LCT

Due to a shift in roles within the board, Largo Communities Together is searching for a new treasurer.

Could this be you?

Bookkeeping is done by a bookkeeper who maintains the books and does the day-to-day bank transactions. Basically, the role involves triaging requests from various fund holders and providing all the information to the accountants at year-end. You don’t have to be a qualified accountant, but you should understand figures.

It is also necessary for you to be IT literate and capable of dealing with online banking. We rely on this position to ensure that the SCIO is legal and that our annual audit and accounts are correct for our submission to OSCR. Throughout all of this, our former Treasurer Emily will provide good support, and we will provide plenty of training.

Our Warm Welcome programme has been going really well, the Library in Lundin Links has another Warm Wednesday on the 18th of January this week and there will be additional snacks for children to accommodate the School Strike Day –

Just come along.

The library is open from 10.00am with tea, coffee and newspapers available. Soup and rolls will be available from 11.00-1.00pm.

There will be crisps, fruit and fruit juice this time too.

It was a marvellous sold out house for the talk organised by the Camera Club, great to so many people were able to hear about the many adventures of filmmaker and photographer Keith Partridge, who used to live locally.

Our Warm Welcome

Largo Area’s Warm Welcome is a new project co-ordinated by Largo Communities Together and supported by Fife Council, The Rotary Club of Leven, The LACRT, The Largo Area Community Council and Fife Voluntary Action. We are also very lucky to have had some sponsorship from Ewan Fraser including ECF Electrical – Thank you !

Largo Library and Community Hub (7 Lundin Square Lundin Links, Fife, KY8 6BH) will provide everyone with a warm and welcoming space through the coldest months this winter.

The library is continuing with their Warm Wednesdays on the 21st of December.

They had some great feedback on the last two Warm Wednesdays and word is spreading.

The library is open from 10.00am with tea, coffee and newspapers available. Soup and rolls will be available from 11.00-1.00pm.

Please spread the word to people who you think will benefit from this warm space.

Everyone is welcome!

On Tuesday afternoons (2:00 – 5.00pm), Thursdays (10:00 – 1.00pm and 2.00-5.00pm) and Saturday mornings (10.00-1.00pm) the library will offer tea, coffee, biscuits and newspapers and a warm space and a warm welcome.

As we are getting organised with our Warm Welcome venues there will be gaps in what we can provide as we rely on volunteers.

To all of you – We had such a fantastic response to our Community Groups Open day, and our first proper Friends of Largo Bay Meeting and it gives us a great picture of the gaps and opportunities we face. It has given us so much to work with as we look forward to 2023 and we also look forward to the next stage of the Local Place Plan and Community Action Plan with a much clearer picture of priorities.

To all the people who showed up at our events; responded to our questions online or got in touch in any way; the volunteers; ocean enthusiasts & litter pickers; all the local schoolchildren; those who come from afar; the parents; businesspeople and community groups (to mention but a few) who have got involved in our activities over the past twelve months – thank you so much !

A few updates

We want to point you to a few things that are coming up and update you on some of what’s been happening.

A chance to come out and have your say will be this coming Community Groups Open Day — Sunday the 4th of December from 12-3pm at the Durham Hall, come along and share your thoughts and have a mince pie – Christmas Jumpers welcome!

There is a lot on this coming weekend with Largo Arts Weekend, The Christmas Fair at the Aurrie and the Craft Fayre at the Montrave Hall so it’s a great opportunity to stay local and explore.

We will be celebrating the community groups that operate in the area with lots in attendance and also thinking about what support those initiatives need – if you have an idea for a group and are looking for support – please do come along to find what we can do or if you want to sign up or chat !

We have also started building an online map where we can record the wishes and thoughts of the community on what we want to protect, change and any issues – we will communicate this to Fife Council Planning Department as well as keep it for our own records and action plan.

Yesterday we started to gather the thoughts of the younger members of the community through Lundin Mill and Kirkton of Largo School where they made maps of what they value and what they use in the neighbourhoods.

Warm Spaces and Christmas Meals

There will be a designated Warm Wednesday programme coming up at the Largo Library ( 7 Lundin Square Lundin Links, Fife, KY8 6BH ) starting next Wednesday the 7th of December and continuing on the 14th and 21st of next month.

This is a pilot and they have had support from several local organisations including the LACRT and Rotary of Leven who have donated soup urns and given financial support. They hope to reach people who will benefit and create a welcoming space through the coldest months – do go along and share a soup, roll and chat between 11am -1pm.

On Saturday mornings (10th and 17th of December) the library will offer tea, coffee, biscuits and newspapers.

If transport or anything is a barrier do get in touch – just reply to this email and we will follow up.

(There is also a talk on at the Largo Library this evening about the Levenmouth Rail Link at 7pm)

The Aurrie has also received support from LACRT and local group HATTI to create a Cozy Christmas day meal for anyone who would like to share company and cheer with the wonderful volunteers and staff at the Aurrie, Lower Largo. We have a Friends of Largo Bay meeting coming up at the end of the week – if you would like to be included in future mailings please reply to this email and we will add you to the list.

There is also an open volunteer day you can join coming up – there is a call to anyone who can help to remove some of the invasive species Rosa rugosa in the bay with Dominic Rye from the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust on Tuesday the 6th of December from 10am -3pm.

Do you run a business, a farm or are you self-employed and work from home?

As Largo Communities Together and in partnership with the Largo Area Community Council we are leading a Local Place Plan for the areas of Upper and Lower Largo, Lundin Links, Woodside, New Gilston, Newburn and Drumeldrie.

A Local Place Plan is a way of capturing and representing the wishes and priorities of a community on their terms.

Next up we have a dedicated evening for those who run businesses planned for the 14th of November at the Durham Hall.

To this end we have sent out cards to business operators though we are still building on our knowledge of our neighbourhoods, so it is possible we have missed some people.

Community Groups

We are also building our knowledge of all of the community groups in the area and know that there have been changes over the past years.

We have been talking one to one with those who help organise community groups or run classes in the area to build knowledge about what the needs and offers are.

On the 4th of December we will hold Community Groups Open Day from 12-3pm at the Durham Hall.

This will be a drop in for anyone to attend with mince pies, tea and coffee. If you organise a community group of any size or run a class in the area – get in touch and reserve a space.

There will be no charge to take part and we hope it will give people an idea of the range of resources there are in the area, if you have flyers or a sign-up sheet bring them along.

Set up will be from 11am on the day.

As we progress with our first ever Local Place Plan and find out what are the priorities in the community for submission to Fife Region we are holding one to one conversations with people who run groups or organisations in the area. This will give us great insight into what is needed and where for future developments. If you help with any community groups and would like a chat about what you need and can offer to the community – just reply to this email.

On that note we are going to have a Community Groups Open Day in the Durham Hall on the 4th of December from 12pm until 3pm at the Durham Hall, Lower Largo and hope as many people as possible from the abundance of groups and organisations that run throughout the area can make it along to showcase what they do.

We are also engaging with everyone in the area who has a business, land or a farm and will be holding an evening event on Monday 14th of November based on forging new connections and a collective strategy for the Largo Area community, please do get in touch if this is you! We want to this reach as many types of business interests in the area so no matter the size or area you operate in do get in touch.

We will also be reaching out individually but don’t want to accidentally miss anyone who wants to be included.

Friends of Largo Bay

We continue to work with the primary schools in the area on gaining an understanding what the children value. Most recently we did three beach cleans for the Great National Beach Clean. Please see the graphs attached for a depiction of what we found. We look forward to welcoming our local Oyster Officer to Largo Bay after the holidays as she comes along to the next outdoor day with the children. More on that soon.

We continue our Friends of Largo Bay group and will be hosting Shaun Suttie of The East Neuk Hatchery at Largo Library on the 26th of October at 7pm. Do come along to find out more about this conservation project which he plans will result in a local centre focusing on regenerating lobster populations.

As we roll into September, let’s take a look back at what we’ve been up to with the Largo Communities Together place plan. We’ve been pretty tied up with the Restoration Forth Project lately, focusing on our beach and sea—no surprises there if you’ve taken a stroll along our coast.

Our journey kicked off with a neat visit to the Ecology Centre earlier this year. We learned a lot about community involvement, and that got us fired up. We’re now part of the Coastal Communities Network, teaming up for beach clean-ups and getting some great advice from folks like Lyle from Project Seagrass.

One eye-opener was a recent clean-up where we found a whopping 89 pieces of rubbish on what looked like a pristine beach. It was a reminder that there’s still plenty of work to do, but it was a lesson for us all.

But we’re not giving up. We’ve got another clean-up planned for this Friday and Sunday.

Looking ahead, we’re feeling positive about what’s to come.

Together, we’re making strides towards a cleaner, brighter future for Largo Bay.

Let’s keep working together and see where this journey takes us.

Maintenance work continues on Lower Largo pier

28th August 2022

On Wednesday 17th August, Largo residents may have seen a Penmans digger at work at low tide in Largo Harbour. The mouth of the harbour had become partially blocked by boulders and debris washed from the end of the pier. Largo Pier Committee, who are working towards major reconstruction of the Pier, responded to harbour users‘ access problems by having the material moved. This work has to be done between tides.

Jimmy Simpson, Chair of the Pier Committee, which operates as part of Largo Communities Together, a registered charity, said, “We’re now trying to raise around £1.6M for full restoration of the Pier. We’ve completed the necessary civil engineering design work and can now pursue major grants. This process takes time, from expression of interest through to full applications and then assessment by the grant bodies and is likely to take 9 months to a year.

When we gain grant support we will take the Pier into community ownership, but in the interim we believe it’s wise to take temporary measures to limit further damage to the pier and maintain its value for harbour users. Today’s work is part of that process. People have been very generous in their support of our work and this along with grants we have raised so far has allowed us to fund the design work we have done in addition to the temporary repair work.”

Restoration Forth

1st April 2022

During the month of March, we sent out a community views postcard and online survey asking three simple questions about the area we live in. We were delighted to receive such a wide range of thoughtful responses back.

We are now analysing the results in a full and thorough way and sorting them into priorities. We will communicate and pass on relevant information to other organizations while we plan our next stage, which will involve interviewing people across the villages and getting to know the needs of individuals, groups and other establishments better too.

This word cloud represents the words that came up when you talked about what you love about the area you live in.

From the outset so many of you who replied emphasised how much you value the community and connections we have in the local area, the sea and coast, and the thriving activity that occurs in the local villages.

Because of this it seems timely for Largo Communities to host an open event that will coincide with UN Oceans day. On Saturday the 11th we will host a Community Sea Day in Lower Largo, starting with a path and beach clean-up kicking off at 1pm at the Temple Car Park.

This will be followed by a beachcomb, sand art and stroll along the coast; a wild swim for those brave enough with the swans group; a gander by the sailing club; some rock pooling when the tide gets low enough and some “sand pier” building by the pier at the back of the Crusoe wrapping up around 4pm

Wear your wellies and bring a bag for rubbish and your bucket and spade!

We will also have an evening event at the Aurrie from 7pm until around 9pm hosting a showing of Into the Oceanic by Rob Page and Elizabeth Oglivie who will be there to talk about what inspired their film about marine health and the many relationships people have with the sea.

We will have an exhibition of Sea inspired art with prizes, drop any entries in to the Aurrie between the 1^st of June and the 8^th of June or email [email protected].

The evening will also provide a chance to talk about our involvement as a community in Restoration Forth and the ongoing work and vision of the Pier group.

Our January board meeting will take place at 19:00 on Monday 13th January 2020 in the Largo Community Library and Hub on Crescent Road, Lundin Links.

LARGO COMMUNITIES TOGETHER LATEST PIER UPDATE

23rd November 2019

We are delighted to share the news that temporary repairs to our pier will be carried out by Alastair Cook on Thursday 28th November.

The main objective is to fill the two holes which have grown on the upper part of the east side. They are being filled with stone.

The structural engineering and QS survey mentioned below has now been done. We expect their full proposals for reconstruction before Christmas.

All this work is carried out with the hotel owners approval.

Once it’s done we will post an update with photos, and, if you’re around, pop down and see for yourself.

There is a long road to go yet. If you wish to join us, offer help, support etc, our membership form can be downloaded from the Contact page on this website. It’s £1 to join. We now have 380 village members.

LARGO COMMUNITIES TOGETHER AUTUMN PIER UPDATE

26th October 2019

As part of Largo Communities Together (LCT), the Largo Pier Group headed by Jimmy Simpson and a very able team of local people who wish to see our pier restored have been working away in the background.

So far, they have secured a Memorandum of Understanding with the owner, £8000 to complete the preliminary civil engineering assessment, and have just contracted with a local firm to do temporary repairs before the winter sets in.

The Pier group are all local volunteers, there is still a mountain to climb to secure funds for rebuilding, we do understand the enormity of the task. We have completed some community consultations over the summer during Largo Arts Week and have had meetings with residents in the last 6 weeks who are directly affected by the pier.

All their views have been recorded to help with the applications for future re-build funding. Anyone can input their views or make offers of help by emailing the Pier Subgroup from the Contact page on this website.
