Friends of Largo Bay
Celebrating Community, Coast and Conservation
Friends of Largo Bay is a growing local volunteer group and Subgroup of LCT dedicated to the protection, celebration, and restoration of our beautiful coastal environment. Since their formation, they have taken practical action to safeguard biodiversity, promote environmental awareness, and creatively engage our community through arts and science.
Environmental Action
From humble beginnings with beach cleans, our work now spans:
Regular beach clean and litter surveys
With data submitted to the Marine Conservation Society to support national policy change.
In 2024 alone, we completed 10 surveys, removing hundreds of kilograms of rubbish and gathering vital environmental data.
We’re proud participants in initiatives like the Great British Spring Clean, with recent events collecting over 600kg of waste, thanks to dedicated volunteers and local support.
Biodiversity Monitoring
We are actively recording, protecting and sharing data on the ecology of Largo Bay and are supported by many organisations:
Over 200 entries in our Largo Bay Species Library.
Monitoring seagrass beds, rocky shore zones, mussel beds and invasive species through citizen science projects like:
Seagrass Spotter
Big Seaweed Search
Show Us Your Mussels
Great UK WaterBlitz
Nature Scot Community Led Biodiversity
We’re proud members of Restoration Forth and the Coastal Communities Network, building knowledge through collaboration.
Art & Educational Outreach
Our creative community projects link learning with place:
Science Saturdays at Largo Library have included sessions on golden spirals, cetaceans, spring flora, and eco-cleaning products.
Coming soon: the Super Sleuth Treasure Hunt – a citizen science adventure for young nature detectives.
Friends of Largo Bay – Community Triptych Project
The Largo Bay Community Triptych is an exciting new project to create a three-panel textile artwork reflecting our community’s connection to the coastline.
The Triptych will express belonging, connection, and environmental stewardship, with input from individuals, families, and local groups.
Partially inspired by the Beach of Dreams UK-wide coastal arts festival, our newest venture is the Largo Bay Community Triptych.
The Largo Bay Community Triptych (1)
A three-panel textile artwork celebrating our connection to sea, shore, and community.
Involves local artists, families, schools, and groups including the Paxton Centre, Lower Largo Friendship Group, and Nursery Yarnbombers.
Using Largo Linen and natural dyes, with contributions stitched, layered, and woven together.
