Creating Connections 2^nd and 3^rd October 2026

The inspiration for Creating Connections comes from a shared love of the “Spell Songs” by Folk from the Oak(opens in new tab). These were created from the heart of a rare and special book “The Lost Words”(opens in new tab) by Robert Macfarlane(opens in new tab) and Jackie Morris(opens in new tab). This book also inspired the film “Lost for Words”

Creating Connections is offered to the community as a celebration of re-connecting to our shared history, nature, to each other and to self.

This is for you if you are curious, value nature, enjoy being with others and want to become more aware of our fragile world and all the species that call it home.

• All the events are open to all ages and abilities (children must be accompanied by their parent/guardian).
• We aim to create space, in a relaxed environment, where people can express their creativity together and find joy in it.

We will start the weekend on Friday watching “Lost for Words” and taking time to chat afterwards about the issues it raises.

On Saturday, relaxed and fun workshops create a space to help us think about our place in the world through art, poetry, music and song.

This will involve reflecting on what has already been lost, appreciating what is around us, reconnecting and finding joy in expressing our creativity together.

Your ticket for a workshop(s) in the morning or afternoon also gives you entry to the evening event, Celebrating Creating Connections, where we will celebrate the time spent together and everything created during the day.

• All events are free, although donations are welcome.
• Spaces are very limited and must be booked through the Ticket Source links at the bottom of the page. If you do not have internet access, please call 07926 416857 during normal working hours.

• The recommended minimum age for all events is 6. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult, and both need a ticket.

Friday 2nd October

Film Showing: Lost for Words

The Largo Library and Community Hub

(Doors/Bar open 18.30, Film 19:00)

This feature documentary, written and directed by Hannah Papacek Harper(opens in new tab), is beautifully photographed and thought-provoking. This is a rare opportunity to see this film, as it is not available on general release.

(Please note there is some nudity and therefore it won't necessarily be suitable for younger viewers)

Hannah writes:

“Our film is an invitation to forge a new relationship with nature and spark dialogue on how to reconnect with it. It provokes questions in both viewer and protagonist. Together we wonder: What is our future? How can we shape it? How do we consider the needs of the non-human world?

Lost for Words was born from a desire to connect with, understand and creatively feel nature. I wanted to find the childhood wonder that can make engaged action beautiful again."

Saturday 3rd October

Every Saturday workshop ticket includes a ticket for Celebrating Creating Connections, a celebration of the connections and creativity of the day in art, music, word, poetry and song. In The Aurrie Mor. Doors open at 6.30pm, event starts 7.00pm.

Celebrating Creating Connections is intended first and foremost for the people who have taken part in the day's workshops, and we hope everyone who attends a workshop will join us in the evening. Places are limited for this reason. Each ticket admits one person to the evening once, however many workshops they attend. If spaces remain, we will run a waitlist so that others can come along.

All workshops are open to all ages. Under 16s are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult, and both must have a ticket.

Morning workshops, 10.30 to 12.30

The three morning workshops run at the same time, so please choose only one of these.

Art Workshop with Jill Calder

Durham Hall, Lower Largo

In this art workshop, the 'Lost Words' book by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris will act as a stepping stone for people to explore the theme of Lost and Found. We'll make artwork involving drawing, words, pictures and experiment with book forms in a joyful, creative and colourful way.

Creating Poetry, Connecting with Nature with Colin Orr

Durham Hall, Lower Largo

This all-abilities, inclusive workshop will explore ways to create collaborative poetry that connects our hearts and minds to Nature. After a short guided meditation, we will weave words together to build poems that explore our relationship with the Natural world.

Nature Walk and Acrostic Poetry, an Outdoor Workshop with Andrew Duff

Meet at The Aurrie Mor

A short journey along the seashore gathering inspiration for an art and poetry-based activity. For young people of all ages, accompanied by their parent/guardian. This is an outdoor session so please dress appropriately for the weather. In the event of very bad weather, the session will be held in The Aurrie Mor.

Afternoon workshops

The afternoon workshops do not overlap with each other or with the morning, so you can book one morning workshop and both afternoon workshops if you wish.

Connecting with Birds, a Science Saturday Workshop led by the Friends of Largo Bay

Largo Library and Community Hub, 13.15 to 14.15

Inviting curious minds of all ages to connect with the 70 bird species of highest conservation concern in Scotland. Through hands-on activities we enter the fascinating world of birdsong and create visual representations of their calls. We also explore stories behind bird names and the many ways birds have inspired humankind.

Singing/Humming/Whistling Workshop with Robin Bell and Greg Smith

The Aurrie Mor, 14.30 to 16.30

Some of the Spell Songs lend themselves to audience participation. So, at this workshop you will learn chorus sections of some of them. This might involve singing, humming along or whistling, whichever you choose, it will be fun! Your role in the evening celebration will be to swell the sound of the joining in bits and the sing-along from inside the audience and hopefully encourage others to sing along too.
