Largo Beach Wheelchairs: Improving Access for All

A Vision from the Local Place Plan

During the community consultations for the Local Place Plan, beach access for all was identified as a priority. Local people made it clear that everyone – regardless of age or mobility – should be able to enjoy our coastline.

How It Began

In September 2022, a steering group was formed to explore how to make Largo beach more accessible. This group brought together local councillors, community representatives, and accessibility advocates:

  • Cllr David Alexander (Fife Council)

  • Cllr Eugene Clarke (Fife Council)

  • David Paterson (Fife Council)

  • Robbie Blyth (Fife Coast & Countryside Trust)

  • Matt Allan (Largo Area Community Council)

  • Jill Miller (LCT Trustee)

  • Jan Kerr (LCT Trustee)

  • Pauline Martin (Fife Council – joined later)

A Plan for Temple Car Park

After several meetings, the group agreed to place a modular building at Temple Car Park, Lower Largo. This will include:

  • A Changing Places Toilet (CPT)

  • An accessible toilet

  • A storage unit for beach wheelchairs

Largo Beach Wheelchairs (LBW)

This exciting new project is being delivered under the umbrella of Largo Communities Together (LCT).

LCT has already purchased:

  • 1 Debug beach wheelchair

  • 1 Hippocampe beach wheelchair

  • 1 Debug beach walker

We have funding for:

  • A Sandpiper paediatric beach wheelchair

  • An Extreme X8 motorised, all-terrain wheelchair – a true game changer for users

The toilets will be jointly managed by Fife Council and Fife Coast & Countryside Trust, with local support.

Working in Partnership

This project has brought many partners together, overcoming challenges along the way. It’s a powerful example of what can be achieved through collaboration and community action.
